February 21, 2014, Orange County, CA: Long time integrated and full service marketing pioneer PSB Integrated Marketing announced this week the merger of PSB Integrated Marketing with Foothill Ranch communications powerhouse, Westamerica Graphics.

Both companies have an equal interest in the combined new corporation, which will be known as Westamerica Communications. Services will be marketed under the Westamerica brand in Southern California and under the PSB brand in other areas of the country.

Bill Berndt, who founded PSB in 1991 explained, “we are excited about this merger of equals and the chance to increase our collective service base to our clients throughout the United States. ORANGE COUNTY, CA: This week, PSB Integrated Marketing announced their support of the Rivals United for a Kure campaign, which unites University of California Los Angeles Bruins and University of Southern California Trojans to raise money for underfunded cancer research. The goal of the campaign is to raise $2 million by the end of the year.  All the money raised will go to UCLA’s Jonsson and USC’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer Centers.

Upon learning about the campaign and attending committee meetings, PSB has offered to underwrite a portion of the printed marketing materials for Rivals United. PSB President Mark DeBellis commented, “We all have been touched by cancer. Being a part of an initiative to help the fight is an important way for PSB to give back.”

The heart of the campaign lies in Southern California, where the rivalry is strongest between the two teams and all their fans.  However, the power behind the campaign lies in its cause.  What better way to show support to those affected by cancer, than to create a unity between one of the biggest team rivalries in history?

This campaign is unlike any other—it is both unifying and competitive, triggering a friendly competition between the two schools.  “Both company founder Bill Berndt and I are Trojan alums. But I have the added pleasure of two Bruin daughters, so this campaign holds significant emphasis for me personally,” remarks DeBellis.  Every committee member feels the same way—from cancer survivors to past UCLA/USC quarterbacks, they all recognize the significance this campaign holds, and are excited to see the fundraising results.

From now until the Big Game on November 17th, large fundraising efforts are planned.  The climax of the campaign will be the Red Carpet Film Premiere & Fundraising Gala of A City Divided, a documentary on the USC/UCLA rivalry.  Held on November 12th at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, with hundreds of people gathering in support of the cause, this event will kick off Rivalry Week.  After dinner and live and silent auctions, the film will be premiered.

Being the first year, things have only just begun.  The committee has high hopes of the future—to spread this campaign throughout great rivalries in the nation.

PSB Announces Its Collection of Brochure Options

Orange County, CA: Think print is out of fashion? PSB doesn’t think so. “We are beginning to see the pendulum swinging back in support of print marketing,” said Mark DeBellis, president of PSB Integrated Marketing. “Marketers are realizing that with declining email click-thru rates and the crowded digital landscape that print is an important foundation of building a brand franchise. With brand building as the goal, we felt the need to create a collection of ideas for marketers.”

Taking a cue from the fashion world, PSB Integrated Marketing is presenting the most effective print  formats in a high-style color catalog. Crafted to deliver brand impressions as well as present critical information, these tools are designed for maximum impact.

The new catalog, “The Brochure: Made to Fit, Designed to Attract,” showcases a variety of client brand projects as examples. Five sections illustrate creative solutions to specific business challenges:

  • “Have We Met Before?”. Brand consistency is critical to any marketing campaign. Coordinated brochure versions keep the company’s image in focus. For example, variations of colors and text may adhere to a common layout or photographic element.
  • “You Caught My Eye”. Businesses can attract attention and make a memorable impression with brochures that maximize visual impact. Eye-catching shapes, folds, and stepped pages add to their appeal and keep information organized.
  • “More Than Meets the Eye”. Complex details pull together with innovative construction techniques. By incorporating pockets, inserts, and stepped layers, brochures present information in a clear, attractive form, while inviting hands-on exploration.
  • “Come a Little Closer”. – For presentations as unique as each business, clients can choose coordinating documents, inserts and envelopes, and pull them together in a single package. The results give readers information along with a sense of the company’s character and style.
  • “Tell Me All About You”. When there’s a story to tell, these brochures convey a wealth of information without overwhelming the reader. Mini-magazine formats work seamlessly with design details such as sheer overlays, clear formatting and bright colors.

Special features create even more possibilities. PSB’s creative and technical skill allows them to work with countless materials and techniques. In addition to various paper and coatings, they also advocate creating specialized construction, such as accordion folds, die-cut shapes and perforations.

It’s not just about style for its own sake. “Brochures are about both form and function,” says PSB Art Director, Molly Hervey. “All the visual elements are there to pull the reader in and deliver the client’s message. That’s what it’s all about. We are collecting these elements to share the different options available. It’s not enough to provide the basic information anymore, the brochure must be an experience in itself.”

Known for its creative flair, PSB comes through again with a striking design reminiscent of a high-fashion magazine. With superb photography and witty commentary, the catalog is equally at home on a coffee table or in the office.

But don’t expect any perfume samples inside. Instead, the catalog includes an insert offering 25% off Design or Print Services for orders placed before October 31. At that rate, even the most outdated brochure can invest in a summer makeover.

Orange County, CA: PSB Integrated Marketing has added two new electric cars to its fleet of company cars. The cars will be used as local delivery vehicles while helping the company further reduce its carbon footprint. “We have always been innovative with our products and services,” explained President Mark Debellis. “It comes as no surprise that we are embracing this new technology too.”

Electric cars are the latest addition to PSB’s Eco-Friendly business practices. Both cars use new technology to maximize fuel-economy but in different ways. The cars include the new Nissan Leaf and the BMW Active E.

The Leaf features several technological advancements, resulting in the equivalent of 106 miles per gallon (mpg) but with a 100% electric engine. Everything in the car is designed to be green, from the LED headlights that use 50% of the power of regular headlights to the body style that is designed to minimize drag and maximize efficiency.

The BMW also uses an electric engine. BMW makes the most of efficacy reducing weight and adapting certain systems from mechanical to electrical which lets them run only when needed. The BMW Active E has an effective range of around 80 miles to a single charge.

PSB Integrated Marketing has always embraced new technologies and environmentally friendly practices. The new electric cars parked at PSB’s corporate offices are further testimony to this commitment. In recent years, PSB has also adapted the following technological innovation/environmentally conscious efforts:

  • Introduced Eco-Smart product line for newsletters that use eco-friendly stocks and smaller finished sizes
  • Integrated digital print solutions including variable data printing, QR codes, and PURLs
  • Incorporated of the FSC-approved paper stocks, which support this global watchdog group that serves to protect the indigenous people from third world logging areas
  • Installed natural gas turbines at PSB’s headquarters producing self-generated power and reducing dependency on the power grid
  • Recycled materials such as used paper stock, residual inks, and metal printing plates to preserve natural resources

PSB believes in the importance of going green. Their goal is to make changes that preserve natural resources and replace them with those that are sustainable or to lower the amount that is consumed. Companies that are going green are leading the way in starting social change. Little changes by a lot of companies can have a large environmental impact.

While the cars are the most recent move in PSB’s efforts to be an environmentally conscious company, they are not the last. The senior management team is always looking for ways to promote their agenda to be an earth-friendly company. Bill Berndt, CEO and founder of PSB, explains his thinking.

“I believe that we need to help set an example within the community,” he said. “Using electric vehicles shows that PSB values our scarce resources and invests in new technologies.”

PSB Integrated Marketing is a Happy Place, Thanks to Its “Fun Team”

Orange County, CA: There aren’t a lot of dull days at PSB Integrated Marketing. Is it any surprise that the same people who published a recipe booklet called “Find Your Happy Place” also have an office “Fun Team?”

Creative people thrive in lively work environments, so having fun in the office can be serious business for marketing professionals. In addition to reducing stress and encouraging creative thinking, office camaraderie can boost morale, develop teamwork, increase employee retention and enhance productivity.

But at PSB, it’s mostly about the fun.

Six employees volunteer for the Fun Team: three designers, two account managers, and one administrator. The group was created several years ago and employees alternate participation. Art Director Molly Hervey works close together with Office Administrator Amy Walton to head up the events. When Molly took maternity leave, Amy stepped in as the organizer. “Molly was on leave over the holidays, so we needed someone to head the team for Thanksgiving and Christmas,” says Walton. “Now that she’s back in the office, we are co-chairs.”

The team maintains a list of all birthdays, so no employee’s special day goes unnoticed. Celebrations include balloons, streamers, banners, and posters created by the designers. And birthdays are only the beginning.

Halloween celebrations include a costume contest, a potluck lunch, and “Secret Boo Baskets” with treats shared anonymously. Employees adorn their cubicles with fake spider webs and other spooky décor.

Traditional holiday fare gets a California makeover with a Thanksgiving Chili Cook-off and December Holiday Fiesta with tacos. Winter Wonderland Week also features Secret Santa gifts, a Crazy Christmas Outfit contest, a prize for the best-decorated cubicle, and Super Casual Friday, when everyone wears pajamas to work.

Charitable donations are a focus, as well. Employees donate to the company’s canned foods drive through November and December, and new toys are collected for underserved children in the community.

“Employees love the company drives, lunches and contests,” says Walton. “It’s a fun way to interact with team members you might not work with on a daily basis. It brings a good sense of community.”

The only complaints are about the candy. “People say they eat too much of it,” explains Walton. “But then again, they complain when we run out!”

PSB Introduces Theme For the Year

Orange County, CA: PSB Integrated Marketing has launched a new creative campaign, succinctly highlighting its mission as a supportive partner. The campaign focuses on PSB’s ability to help clients meet their goals without the corresponding pressures.

“Decompress. Direct. Delegate.” The three words summarizing PSB’s theme reflect its mission of making each client’s job easier.

“The credit union movement is based on the philosophy of people helping people, and that’s what we’re about, too,” said Mark DeBellis, PSB President. “When clients delegate to us, they direct us according to their goals and vision. Then they can relax, while we use our expertise to design a marketing plan that delivers the results they’re looking for.”

To introduce the theme, PSB mailed its clients packages containing insulated logo cups, a brochure outlining the ways PSB can ease clients’ stress, a drink recipe booklet, and an offer to win a free spa gift certificate in the recipe contest. The gifts remind clients that PSB takes care of everything their project requires, leaving them more free time to handle deeper strategic issues.

Carrying the theme forward with an innovative twist, clients were invited to post their favorite non-alcoholic beverage recipes on the PSB website to enter the drawing for the spa gift certificate. Their recipes were then compiled into a new recipe booklet distributed at the March Credit Union National Association Conference in New Orleans.

Find Your Happy Place: Drinks to Decompress With includes 30 pages of refreshing recipes. Since the drinks are non-alcoholic, they’re office-friendly. “Make up a recipe and share with your colleagues,” the booklet suggests. “It’s time to relax, hydrate, and get things done!”

Ingredients such as herbs, citrus wedges, fruit juices and sparkling water meet with the occasional surprise, like jalapeno peppers or gingersnap cookies. PSB employees voted the “Virgin Bocce Ball” their favorite.

In fact, PSB’s new tradeshow booth features candlelight and cucumber-lemon water designed to simulate the spa experience. These sensory delights viscerally convey the message that working with PSB allows clients to delegate and direct, then put their feet up and decompress with a refreshing beverage. The theme will be used in all future corporate outreach.

Find Your Happy Place: Drinks to Decompress With is available free by contacting PSB through its website.
